Description

Baby White bengal tiger (indian tiger, Panthera tigris tigris, tygr indicky, bila forma) from ZOO Bratislava, Slovakia :D Soon there will be probably NO white tigres at least in North American ZOOs. But it is a good news! Do you want to know why? Then have a look here - [link]

And I remind you of the Animal photo calendar 2010 FOR FREE :D

____________

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
Location: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan,Pakistan, Myanmar, Tibet
Size: 310cm long body, 110 cm high weight: 220 Kg
Diet: deer (sambar, chital, barasingha, hog deer and muntjac), wild boars, water buffalo, gaur, nilgai antelope, monkey, birds, hares, foxes, dhouls, leopard, jackals...
Conservation status: Endangered
Interesting facts: Tigers do not live in groups, every tiger has its own territory and it marks it with urine, being very territorial, protecting its area. Tigers meet only to mate. Females care for their 2-5 kittens alone. Males are dangerous for kittens, they can kill them | Bengal tiger is the second biggest subspecies of tiger | lokal people are afraid of tigers and kill them because of this fear and also to protect their cattle. Tigers are killed also because of their wonderful fur and some parts of their bodies are used in tradition medicine | Tigers can eat 20 Kg of their prey at one moment and then they starve | Bengal tigers do not climb the trees | Bengal tigers can perfectly swim and they spend a lot of time in water to cold themeselves

You might not know: Why is white tiger white? Many people do not know it, but white tiger is not any special species. It is simply a variant of normal Bengal tiger, but a hybrid one. No, it is not albino. White tigers have blue eyes and dark skin on their paws. They are something special, having some recessive gene, which makes them white. White tigers are extremelly rare in the wild and they have problems to hide and hunt for prey, because their colour makes them too visible for hunting. In India, people managed to capture one young male white tiger in 1951. They let him mate with normal female. None baby was white – so the father mated with his normal orange daughter and white babies were finally born. All white tigers in the World’s ZOOs have origin in this only one captured male. Unfortunately, too common (but not the only one) way how to breed white tigers is inbreeding, which means, that fathers mate with daughters, brothers mate with sisters and so on. As a result, many cubs are born deformed or dead. Honestly, there is no reason to celebrate birth of baby white tiger, because such baby can be compared to birth of human child with three legs or four eyes.
There is a serious discussion, if white tigers should be kept. They are great attraction for ZOOs and they bring money, but the prize is maybe too high.....
