Some bad stuff, dA love and white wolves - PHOTOS

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 2, 2011, 1:24 PM

Hello!

I must say, that I see it more and more often here on dA. When I browse photos of animals, I almost everytime find photos of road kills or dead animals in general, often deatiled shots of their entrails and decayed bodies. I understand that some people can not take photos of alive animals in ZOOs or in the wild, but seriously... do they need to post dead animals? Moreover, usually bad quality snapshots of bowels? :( :( I think some people just forget that this is deviantART. AAAAAARRRRRRRTTTT. I do not think that remains of dead racoons are art. I find it disgusting. At least it should be posted to category "Horror", not wild animals :/ just saying my opinion.

Edit: people, I speak about REALLY disgusting photos of animals, which are torn into bloody pieces by cars. I do NOT speak about photos of dead animals in general, which can be used for anatomy references :)

On the other hand, I hope you noticed that time to time, I give some critiques, usually to people, whose photos are fantastic, but in my opinion, they do not have the attention they deserve. I really do not feel like some superior artist or fantastic photogrepher, who can give advice to other authors. I just know that if I post a critique, some nice animal pictures become visible to you, my dear watchers and that you usually appreciate such photos with some comments and faves :aww:

I do not post my critiques to pretend I can advice the other. I post them, because I believe some photos are so wonderful and their authors are so gifted, that they need to be recognized. And I think YOU, my watches, can discover some new very talented animal photographers through those critiques :) that's all. For me, those critiques are my way how to contribute to dA love :)

It took me a moment to realize what had happened when I logged in a while ago... I had received like 50+ new feedback messages in little over 12 hours:O usually I get some ~5 of them in the same amount of time:faint:
Thank you so much for the feature!

I have agree with you that gruesome dead animals shouldn't be in "wild animals" category... I would understand if there was clean (=non-bloody) high quality photos in viscera classified under resources - I actually found a deviant who had a folder in her gallery for such photos. May sound icky, but one can actually learn a lot from those photos, as she has named the internal organs on the pictures! Reminds me of 9th grade biology lessons when we studied human anatomy... our teacher showed us some (animal) viscera and dissected them so we would get better idea of the anatomy of the internal organs. (I still remember how she said "and all the future vets and brain surgeons to the front line") There's no better way to learn anatomy than seeing it yourself... But what you were talking about in the journal - it's just disgusting

We need to remember that humans are animals who need to mature over time. For some this is an easy process and they start out nice, while others go through a rather useless peroid of teens/tweens where they are as stupid and repulsive and rebellious as possible. Given time most turn out OK, a very few end up wise and many end up in jai or politics, but that's the nature of the species.

Yes, I'm not interested in seeing animals torn apart. It just might leave me feeling sad and... messed up. Your pictures, on the other hand, are beautiful and masterfully done. Very professional. Thank you for the contribution to dA love. The world needs more love. :)

If the photo is artfully done, I think it can be considered art - even violent death is part of life and art does not always depict those aspects we think of as beautiful.

However, yes, I do rather think they need to be put under horror/macabre, or at the very least should have a mature content warning label on them for those who don't want to look. Exception might be if, say, some really interesting piece of anatomy happens to be exposed (which usually won't happen with roadkills but, just saying on the off chance) maybe still put it under animals category but with a warning attached, since it can be used as a ref but can also be a bit sensitive for some people.

But if it's just some gruesome snapshot where they didn't even put any thought into lighting or composition or any of that... no, it doesn't belong here.

I've noticed there are a lot of...macabre fans on DA. But really, seeing such images does not inspire me in the least. At the most, it leaves me disgusted and wanting to erase said images from my mind. :P That goes for mutilated animals and humans, too. Art? I think not.

The only thing I can think that it might possibly be useful to have such a photo is in some sort of photomanip, a sad and grim topic but one that may come up nonetheless. But yes I agree other than that it's kind of sad and disgusting.
On a lighter note, great shots as always! Those wolves are so beautiful and you do them proud with your pictures.

Well, I think it is best for those that actually do upload dead animals to make note as to why they're uploading their work. Is it for anatomy be it a Biology class or Zoology? (I'm sure I'm mispelling this.) Or even if the animal was caught by it's predator. I hold off on such photos as it can be unattractive to some of my viewers. I think about those that view my work and how they might react.
I have some photos of mother nature doing the nasty and some of the predator eating it's prey. There's only one or two predator vs prey photos that I have uploaded but they're not unattractive or make my viewers think twice about me.

I honestly, think that the uploaders should at least make a note as to why they're uploading photos of deceased animals.

On a brighter note: Your photography is always gorgeous! E> ~ <3 Owlie

I do not think that animals torn into little pieces can be used for anything except of making people sick...

I definitely do not critize photos of predators eating prey ;)

Well if it's for an anatomy class of some sort I wouldn't really think about uploading it to a website of any kind. I'd just print it out and show it to my science teacher. I agree, looking at deceased animals be it online or in person is always gross and sad.
As for Predator vs Prey Photos, I think there should at least be a line crossed. :) It depends on what parts of the prey's body are visible. And if it can be considered art of some sort.

Dead animals might be good references for people who want/have to draw a dead animal, but honestly i won't see that.
Bad quality Shots aren't real art, but they might still works as reference.
Same with Taxidermy, i don't want to see that <.< they might should get their own category?
..
..
And Nude/Porn Photography >:U
If i browse for foxes or stuff i see naked womans or even naked young girls who are posing with foxfur or taxidermy foxes. x_x (Or even womans who call theirself fox <_<)
just eww. ;_;

Taxidermy does have its own category now, but a lot of the older art in that category hasn't been moved over yet. They didn't do a very good job of announcing it to folks so a lot of them don't know they have a better category for their stuff now.

I hate it when people take the pictures with some crappy cameraphone. But for the good-quality ones, (and this is just my opinion) I just focus on "Death is a part of nature, and nature is beautiful".

Oh my god. I know how you feel about the posting of the dead animals. I have come across... I don't know how many when refreshing the home page to see people's new additions. It's sickening! No one wants to see a dead animal anyway. Or at least I don't. And half the time it's like... The quality of a terrible cell phone picture. I try my best to steer clear.

And such beautiful pictures of wolves. :)

This is not art, bad quality snapshots of anything is not art. But, when taken properly, photographs of deceased animals can be just as much art as photographs of live animals.

There needs to be an admin on DA that regulates what is an artistic photo and what is just crap. :| Same with that Nude or Porn photos that DA did a blog thing on. Dead animals can be artistic photos but most likely 99% of what you are seeing isn't artistic, it's just dumb kids posting stupid photos....
This is not Myspace! :shakefish:

I think the fear, though, is trying to figure out where to draw the line. That DA is one of the few places without specific art quality standards is part of what attracts so many users who may not feel confident in their works, and lets them be in an evironment where artists of all skill levels are which encourages many to learn.

Yes, a lot of it isn't artistic which is a pain, but there are lots of other art sites that are more heavily moderated for standards of what they define as "art". If I'm a beginning artist and I took a photo that I meant to be artistic and somebody labeled it a snapshot and said it wasn't allowed, I'd be pretty discouraged and for those without the confidence for that, it can crush the whole learning experience. For me DA is about more than that.

It sucks that so much of what's posted ISN'T art, but the lack of obsessing over the lines between art and snapshots and such does foster a slightly less "threatening" environment. It's why I chose to bring my art here instead of moving on to someplace where I'd have to prove my worth to even get in.

So... long way of saying I agree but disagree at the same time, I guess. I'm bad at explaining my opinions which somehow translates to me getting wordy in the hope that it will clarify. o.o;;;;
