Poor wolves are ill :( Photos (but with warning)

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 27, 2013, 11:40 AM

Hi,

today it was the worst ZOO visit ever.
This spring I noticed that the molting (process of loosing the thick winter fur and having just much shorter summer fur) of the wolves is very different from the molting I witnessed during the last years. The wolves looked ill, like having scabs on their faces and bodies.
It made me nervous, so I was curious about my today's visit. I planned to shoot baby wolves.

What I saw shocked me.
ALL the pack members seem to have some skin problems. Less or more serious, all of them are effected, showing symptoms. I do not know if it is mange or so, but it looks horrible. Two wolves (and I am VERY afraid the most ill one is Atila) have almost bare bodies, they lost almost all the fur. All of them keep scratching. What a horrible, horrible sight, I almost cried there :( even the tiny puppy is ill, it was born just few weeks ago, but I see its legs show the signs of the same illness.
I hope the vets will find the cure.
I am soooo down since I saw them today :(

I post some photos of ill wolves: people, if you are sensitive or underage, consider if you REALLY want to scroll down to see the photos. They are really very very awfull :(

If i looked at those pictures again, without knowing what breed of canine they were, i wouldn't think they were wolves..

Wait, you said in the text that "I am VERY afraid the most ill one is Atila"

That would suggest that he was alive and ill when the others were, meaning his death couldn't have caused this...?

yeah, I was wrong :( I could not see him among the others, so I though he was the most affected one :( then I was told he died...

The poor ones. As mabela already said, the vets should be able to cure it with the right injections. I wonder why they did not get active earlier? Can you not ask a keeper or write an email to the zoo that you are concerened about the wolves and why they do not treat them against those parasites?

they can not treat it with shots, because the cause is psycho-somatic, they are stressed after the death of alpha wolf...
it is not caused by parasites :(

It's mange, they look EXACTLY like my wolfdog did when she started showing the symptoms of demodex mange. It's very irritating to the dogs.

If it's sarcoptic it's very easy to get rid of, but demodex is hereditary and is passed down from mother to pup.

Ako je nieco taketo v ZOO mozne ?? Resp....od kial mohli nieco takto hrozne nachytat? Z potravy? Z kontaktu s niecim?

And now we know why the look like that. Their wolf leader passed away and they gotten so stressed over it that they shed their fur to the point of looking like that.

How could they get like this?! Aren't there people looking after them if they are in a zoo?! It makes me sick to my stomach to see such beautiful animals in a state like this when they are supposed to be protected by people.
