Love of wolves (mating season) - PHOTOS

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 18, 2012, 10:04 AM

Hello :)

First of all, kiriban (766 666) is VERY close!

At second, Brno's females, Alex and Clair, are in heat now. I went to the ZOO to take some photos - because of mating season, wolves were very excited and active. I had a great chance to watch their fantastic and natural behavior, which included gentle touches, aggresivity (not between alphas and beta, but younger wolves were somehow excited) and mating itself. It was just incredible to observe so intimate moments of the lives of wolves. Thanks to winter, I was totally alone with them - only me and wolves. I would like to share some shots I took - sorry for lower quality, the weather was cloudy and as you can imagine, wolves were moving a lot. Although I took some photos of mating itself, I do not want to post such shots. Not to offend some of my watchers (mating and also eating are absolutely natural for animals ;)) but to somehow respect privacy of the wolves :)

Thank you for every :+fav: it would help me to share this :D

*squints* so wait, when a wolf is in heat the females bleed, like a human on their menstrual cycle? (I have no ideas about canine mating apparently XD)

most females are in heat only in some time - like wolves, they are in heat in winter, they slightly bleed and they are ready for mating ;)

while human women have a period :) it is different :)

What an interesting behavioral display. The paw nudge is so cute and also funny. I like how impatient the females are. "Hey, hey you! This is important! Get up!" Thanks for posting this, it's really cool. :)

White wolves always remind me of my samoyed (until I see the massive paws!). Just through the pictures I can remember how soft his ears were. I wonder what a brushed out wolf would look like. lol

What do you mean by heat? You mean the temperature was warm?
Reply
:iconforgottenwolfspirits:
ForgottenWolfSpirits Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2013  Student Artist
No. "In heat" means a female animal will produce a scent, that we humans can't smell, but males can. The scent will attract any nearby male. The male will follow the female. If the female gets more than one male, she might choose. The male will sniff her behind, and that is a way of how they get to know each other. Once they become mates, they play with each other. Then, the female will do some sort of signal, telling the male she wants to mate. They mate, and blahblahblah. You get the story now, right?

Fertile she-wolves are "in heat" So basically, females in het are at that one time of the year that they can become pregnant.

So they can't become pregnant any other time of the year?

No. Only that time, and only the alpha pair can have pups. The other she-wolves help dig a whelping den and take care of the pups when they finally come out of the den a week or so after birth.

Oh. Hey do you know if its like dogs? How they can't open their eyes for a while after birth?

:iconmysticmcr:

When theyre born, their ears and eyes are sealed so they can't see or hear, only feel, smell and taste until about ten days after birth, which is when they open them.

No. Being in heat is like when a woman is on her period. When a female wolf is fertile and ready to mate. :3

I do not know what a period is and I do not know what fertile is.

The information WolfTwine gave you is wrong. The period in women and the "heat" in other mammals are not the same thing. In most mammals, females have vaginal blood loss during ovulation, which means they are fertile (ready to mate) and this is called "heat". In human females the period occurs about two weeks after ovulation. When the ovum is not fertilized, it is eliminated along with blood. That's what we call "period" or "menstruation", which is the time of the month when a woman is not fertile. So, heat and period are basically opposite situations.

I'm sorry but I can't really believe that if you don't know what a period is :,3 or what fertile means. I guess some parents didn't tell there children but I don't know if people do that anymore
