Big question for Americans + animals - PHOTOS

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 31, 2012, 2:54 PM

Hi :D

At first, there is a question I wanted to ask the Americans for years :XD: so I would be grateful for answer, thank you
I know it is completely silly to judge anything through movies, but...
Ok, the question of life and death:

Do you Americans REALLY enter your houses and flats with your shoes on? :XD:

I mean - in every movie or TV serie, people always get into their homes and walk through all the rooms with their shoes on. And there are so many scenes with teenagers jumping to their beds (!!!!!) right after getting back from school, still wearing shoes! :XD: it seems so silly to me - shoes are always the most dirty part of clothes, so I need to ask :D

For example in the Czech republic, it would be culturally unacceptable to enter the main rooms with shoes still on :D
The first place you see after you get into average Czech flat or house, is a small space where you take your shoes (and usually also coats, jumpers or jackets) off. And yes, Czech movies and series do have scenes with people taking their shoes off :D
Sometime you are supposed to remove them even before you enter the house or flat at all!
And visitors usually have a strong tendency to take the shoes off before they enter, it is ALMOST a question of good manners to start removing your shoes in front of the door, while the host says ,,oh, come in and remove them inside" :D
Even if you are ready to leave the flat and you forgot some thing you need in another room, you are supposed to take your shoes off and then go for that forgotten stuff :D my parents are always angry when I enter our living room (which is right next to the "vestibule" where the shoes are) for some thing I need :XD: when I forget something in a bedroom or in a bathroom, I even remove only one shoe and them jump on one leg to get forgotten thing :D

So I always gaze in disbelief at all those American scenes with people laying in bed with shoes :D
Thanks for answer! :D

(late comment on this since i am catching up on all my inbox stuff)
Yes, Americans wear their shoes inside. I myself actually hate shoes so usually I take them off whenever i get home and I know I wont be going anywhere else in a short time. I usually take them off in my room, or by the door if they are wet. I find shoes uncomfortable to wear. I also normally take my shoes off at friends house by the door if I know I won't be going anywhere with them or won't be going outside.. I actually bugs me that my dad wear his all the time, even if he isn't going anywhere or outside. We even made a rule in our house to not wear shoes inside unless we are of course going outside and he's the only one who didn't bother to follow. So I never really understood why people wears shoes inside all the time throughout the day. Plus since I always put my feet up onto things or sit with my legs crossed or under me so I don't like the idea of wearing them when done so. Very uncomfortable to wear them while on the couch (unless i know i am not going to sit like i normally do, like while eating something I got from a restaurant, or waiting for someone) or on the bed

I agree! I also can not understand that people wear shoes inside houses :D I always put them off them as soon as I enter the flat. Sometime I even wash my feet after arrival :D

:D At least is good to know that I can follow the taking the shoes off custom really well if I were to visit a country that has that rule about shoes. There's a reason why there are closet doors next to the main entrances of houses! My dad also complains how there's so many shoes of my mom's that are next to the doors and in the closest. Like those closets have a reasoning, they are meant to jackets and shoes.

[Germany] We don't wear shoes in house normally(Seriously, how would you keep the floor clean?), but when we visit friends for a birthday party, have a little barbecue or other festive occasion we leave them on.

I never wear shoes in the house. I don't like shoes much to begin with, and I hate wearing them. I find them uncomfortable, and I feel like my feet can't breath. I'm used to people walking into home with shoes still on, and only some take them off (after they have walked in with them still on). They usually only take them off because they want to get more comfortable though, not for respect or dirt.

Here in Spain it is very very usual. For not saying, I don't recall taking my shoes off for entering a house... well, never.

Depends on where you are I guess. I always take my shoes off at friends houses, but sneak around with mine on at my house XD

I'm not American (I'm Irish) but thought I'd let you know in Ireland we usually leave our shoes on, don't know why. If they were muddy or something though we'd take them off.
