Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus) from ZOO Prague, Czech republic :D

Lobo, the last winter when he was a strong leader of the whole pack. Then he got weaker because of his old age, he lost his alpha position and was treated so horribly by other pack members that the ZOO decided to be merciful and put him to sleep. I miss him, he was amazing alpha...

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus)
Location: Eurasia (From Europe, to China and Russia)
Size: 1.6 m long + 50 cm tail, 100 cm high weight: 80 kg
Diet: medium sized ungulates (moufflon, chamois, saiga, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and livestock), smaller prey (frogs, mice, hares) but also fruit
Conservation status: Least Concern in general. But in some countries, there are only few animals. For example in the Czech republic, there are only some 15 Eurasian wolves, so wolves are critically endangered in my country.
Interesting facts: wolves live in the packs with strict hierarchy. Only alpha male and alpha female mate. Femalethen gives birth to 4-7 cubs. Mother and father both take care of them and then whole the pack helps them to rise the pups | wolves were exctinct in the Czech republic, as people successfully killed them all. Now, wolves are slowly returning from Slovakia and some 15 wolves live in Beskydy mountains. Unfortunately, some people still want to kill them, because they are afraid of wolves | fear of wolves is officially called Little Red Riding Hood syndrome | Eurasian wolves are very adaptable | their colourings vary a lot. | wolves have important roles in many myths, legends and fairy tales. They fascinate people.

*grabs the right wolf by the mane and wrestles him down* And you remember YOUR place!

Yeah it's strange how things can do a complete 180 one people and animals. Well lets see how the pack does now.

Nice shot; it's not every picture that you get to see the actual hierarchy. And the one on the left looks so guilty!

That wolf looks so sad. Poor old Lobo, it's too bad he was treated so poorly by the rest of the pack. Funny how wolves are sometimes.

Seems rather sad that they'd put him down due to harassment rather than him actually being unhealthy...

The pack was likely telling him to get out, that he wasn't welcome there anymore. But obviously there was no where for him to go since he was a captive wolf. Eventually it probably would of escalated to the point of him being killed... And that would not of been a pleasant death, a wolf has little empathy when it comes to killing something, they do not understand pain as we do.

They could of taken him out and had him in a solitary exhibit, if they had the room, but wolves are very social animals and he probably wouldn't of been very happy.

It is extremely sad but that is the world we live in. We have to pick the lesser of two evils.

You had a good run, buddy! Rest in peace!

So sad it had to happen, but it's better than letting him suffer constant beatings and harassment, and possible death from being ripped apart and stuff by his own kind (possibly his very own offspring). He always looked like he was very well taken care of and I'm sure he had a great life, better than any wolf in the wild would have a chance of living.

Out of all of your wolf photos, I loved the Eurasian wolves the most. Love their colors and they always have such personality! Lobo especially!

I feel bad, but I understand that it was probably torture to him to have fallen so low in the pack and be treated so badly. It sucks, but in the end I guarantee it was kinder than allowing him to live like that. It's the natural order, he would have died eventually in probably a much more violent manner, so it was kind to allow him to go in relative peace.

i don't think they should have put him to sleep :/ they could have put him in with a calmer pack member and live out the rest of his days with a partner. or shipped him to a zoo that has room if they didn't.

no ZOO would accept a very old wolf, it would be a torture for him :) I saw him soon before his death, it was clear ha was about to die, he looked totally diferent... I am glad ZOO was merciful and put him down

So beautiful. I love the emotion that's coming from this. This was captured so well, as you are always able to capture such amazing photos, Woxys.
Another thing that really caught my eyes was the eyes of the wolf that is being bared down (Not sure how else to say it) by Lobo. I love the golden look inside of them!
