Story of the photo: I am always glad to see Tom. He was born in my home city, Brno and moved to Prague to become a mate of young female Alberta. Tom seems very happy there - he is playful, active, not showing any stereotypical behavior. Today, he really loved playing with ice-cube and rolling on snow

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)
Location: Arctic areas: Greenland, northern parts of North America and Asia
Size: 2,5 – 3 metres long male‘s body weight: adult males weigh 350–680 kg (females are much smaller and lighter)
Diet: seals, belugas, dead whales, muskox, reindeer, birds, eggs, rodents, shellfish, crabs, berries
Conservation status: Vulnerable
Interesting facts: believe or not, skin of polar bear is black | polar bears can swim perfectly, they can spend 2 minutes underwater | mother gives birth usually to twins, whose size can be compared to a Guinea pig. Babies have no imunity (cold arctic air literally sterilize all the bacteria) and they need to drink mother’s milk to gain some. In ZOOs, it is extremely difficult to rise the cubs – only 8% of them survive | polar bear’s liver is poisonous | the only natural threads of polar bears are killer whales and walruses | polar bear is the biggest species of bears | polar bears are sometime followed by arctic foxes, who eat rest of bear’s preys
