Harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja, harpyje pralesní).

I am SO SO SO happy I have this fantastic predator in my gallery - FINALLY! :la: to me, this individual seemed to be rather small - for example the one I saw in Berlin was so much bigger that you would guess it was totally different species!

____________

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja)
Location: Rainforests of South and Central America
Size: 105 cm long wingspan: 220 cm weight: 6-9 Kg (for a female, males are smaller)
Diet: monkeys, sloths, birds, coati, opossum, reptiles. They are top predators
Conservation status: Near Threatened
Interesting facts: it is difficult to judge which species of an eagle is the largest one, but harpy eagle is definitely among the three largest species | harpy eagle hunts its prey during the fligh – the bird flies through the forest, taking the animals right from the branch. Harpy eagle can bear amazingly heavy prey in its claws | the patents prepare the nest only once in three years. The female lays two eggs, but eagles usually rise only one baby, who is fed by patents for more than a year | Harpy eagles are large and dangerous birds - there was at least one case of a ZOO keeper killed by this eagle!

*clears throat* Besides that, the composition is wonderful in this shot. I love how you were able to get it while he/she had his/her head plume feathers up. And the look in it's eyes are wonderful. Love the shot and Love the bird! Well done!

That is fantastic! :) I love harpy eagles, and you don't often see photos of them. My manager at work tried to photograph the ones at the San Diego Zoo in California, but they were too far up and behind caging to get decent photos. Anyway, there was recently a Nature episode about harpy eagles, titled "Jungle Eagle". I bought the DVD because you don't often see nature shows about harpy eagles, either.
