INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:Name: Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex)
Location: tropical east Africa (Sudan – Tanzania)
Size: body: 120 cm, wing span: 230-260 cm
weight: 7 Kg
Diet: fish, reptiles, birds, little mammals
Conservation status: Vulnerable
Interesting facts: its amazing big beak gave this bird a name – in various languages, they are called shoebills, whale-headed storks or boat-beaks
| they live in swamps, they inhabit river shores
| female lays 2 eggs, both parents take care – they put water on eggs and they spread the wings above the nest to protect the eggs and babies from direct sun
| they have unnusual hunting technique, as their beak is very big and heavy
| they hunt even crocodiles!
| they do not live in groups, they are solitary. Only during mating season, they meet and then they take care for babies
| they are very shy
| there are only 13 ZOOs in the world which keep shoebills!
