Black form of a leopard (no idea which subspecies, sorry :( if you know for sure, let me know, please. Two black guys, male and a female, stayed close to Javan leopards, but had only "black leopard (panthera pardus" sign on their cage...) from Tierpark Friedrichsfelde Berlin, Germany.

It is VERY difficult to take photos of them because of the double fence and stupid exhibit which is boring and with a brick wall in the background. Cats are dark and the cage (yes, they live in a cage :|) is also quite dark, which is not anything good for a camera. The animals were moving a lot - I do not know how I managed to capture this, but I am pretty proud of it :D

Gorgeous photo, I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to get a shot like this :o

Just wanted to ask, is it okay if I use this as a reference for a drawing? I made a sketch yesterday just for practise, but it's turning out quite good so I might want to put it on dA once it's finished, if that's okay with you :meow: I'll give full credits to you in the description, of course. I don't usually draw much from photos, but yours are just amazing and just looking at them gives me such inspiration so I barely know what to do with myself :stare:

I've also found that melanine in the Indochinese leopard (Panthera pardus delacouri) it's manifested very very often. So maybe it can be a delacouri, who knows.

Researching on the internet, i've found that true black panthers are in danger of estinction and are very rare in zoos and in wilderness. It's bigger than a black leopard or black jaguar, it's completely black, more agile, better predator and usually scratch trees at high altitude as a demonstration of size and dominance by stretching their bodies from the ground. They tend to flee from humans.
The black jaguar or black leopard is a "hibrid", it's smaller, they are more easy to find and they are normally confused with true panthers. They usually live in the same habitat.
But I haven't found anything of subspecies, sorry :P

but black panther is not a species, it is just a form of a leopard or jaguar with black colour...

that's what i think, but i have interpreted my research as that there is a sub species from panthera pardus or onca that usually gets more melanine manifested individuals and it's what is called true panthers, whereas black leopard or jaguar is a mixure of those panthera pardus or onca who are, let's say, pure, (dominant alelles, homocigotic) whith others who are yellow , having a not completely black offspring.

Awesome photo! Nice capture!!! Especially considering the conditions. I wish the people who look after them would get them a better environment... they should NOT be in small dark cages. Breaks my heart!!!!!!!

The black leopard we had in our zoo (until she escaped O.o) was in a big glass enclosure with leaves stenciled on and there was only about a four foot gap in the stencils to look in and see her. I went all the time and never saw that cat, then she escaped and disappeared and I heard nothing more about it. It was rumored for years they never found her and she was still wandering around in the woods in Asheboro, NC. I'm sure they found her and moved her but her exhibit was empty for years and I have no idea what's in there now.
